Today is Worm Full Moon Day & International Women’s Day

Today is Worm Full Moon Day & International Women’s Day. Tonight, make sure that you take a moment to check out the full moon before you go to sleep. This full moon is called “Earthworm Full Moon” for a good reason.
Did you know that the full moon tonight represents the day that earthworms start to come out of the thawing ground? The First Nations actually have a name for each full moon, and their “Worm Moon” meant the beginning of Spring in their culture. Robins also will become more and more common, as their return is well-timed for those delicious earthworms. Other names for today’s full moon are: Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Sugar Moon, Sap Moon, Chaste Moon, and Death Moon. Today is also International Women’s Day so there is a lot of celebrate in one day. In countries where Women’s Day is a public holiday, workers get the day off to celebrate. Armenia, Burkina Faso, Mongolia and Kazakhstan are a few of the countries that are taking the day off. In some countries, such as China, only women get the day off.
Earthworms are actually hermaphrodites, and have the amazing ability to regenerate lost segments of their body. How the heck am I going to use an earthworm to represent Nanaimo’s real estate market you may ask? When you consider that traditionally Nanaimo’s Spring market is much more active compared to Winter months, it does seem as though our real estate market has the ability to evolve and grow. We have seen a fairly balanced early start to 2012 as prices between buyers and sellers seem more aligned than “the great divide” that results in fewer buyers for a surplus inventory of over-priced inventory, and literally creates a downward real estate market. With HST rules now set by the BC government, new home sales have picked up as buyers know what to expect, and the $10,000 first time new home buyer rebate has encouraged hesitant “property virgins” to enter the housing market.
The calculation of a full moon (assuming a circular orbit) can be calculated from the following equation: Could you imagine how complicated buying real estate would be if we relied on the calculation of a full moon to decide when to buy or sell real estate? Professional Realtors study market trends and have a good pulse on the market. Often times, they will have advance warning about mortgage rate changes, and this can literally save clients thousands of dollars. To illustrate this point, JUST this morning the Bank of Canada left the country’s key interest rate unchanged today at 1.00%. That’s where it has stood since September 2010. In turn, prime rate should remain at 3.00%, making today’s Bank of Canada meeting mostly inconsequential for variable-rate mortgage holders in the near-term. This is critical news for home buyers as even a small increase in interest rates can make the difference in terms of affordability for a property. As a Realtor, I would caution buyers to protect themselves for the long-term as interest rates will eventually rise with a stronger global economy. Purchasing a home that is LESS than what you are pre-approved for with your lender will allow you peace of mind when it comes to an uncertain interest rate when it comes time to renew in 5 or 10 years.
Like an earthworm and full moon, real estate has a cycle. It is important to understand this cycle and by using a Realtor, you can ensure that you are able to make an informed and educated decision when you buy or sell. With respect to women, there is an emerging trend in North America buying real estate. Did you know that TWICE as many single women are buying real estate compared to single men? Single women make up more than one-third of the growth in real estate ownership since 1994.
I may not know very much about worms or moons (or even women as my wife sometimes tells me), but I know one fact to be true. Nanaimo truly is the most wonderful place to call home.
